Physical Description: Dwarves are a short and stocky race, and stand about a foot shorter than most humans, with wide, compact bodies that account for their burly appearance. Male and female dwarves pride themselves on the length of their hair, and men often decorate their beards with a variety of clasps and intricate braids. A clean-shaven male dwarf is a sure sign of madness, or worse—no one familiar with their race trusts a beardless dwarf.
Society: Although life in the mountainous regions surrounding Melandar is tough and cruel the dwarves would have it no other way. Dwarves are incredibly adept craftsman and their workmanship is undeniably the best available. Although the dwarves are currently ruled by a monarchy the vestiges of past theocratic rule are easily spotted throughout dwarven cities and religion tends to carry a lot of weight in dwarven circles.
Relations: (Needs to be re-worded) Dwarves took in the Gnomes eons ago and look upon the Gnomes as cousins come home. The Dwarven race swore an oath to protect the Elven population and they take great care no to break this oath. They often look upon the Elves (either Bastarian or Illyrian) as children to be cared and can become over-protective at times. Dwarves see Halflings as an agreeable people, especially when it comes to food. Orcs are viewed with some wariness and sometimes as unwelcome guests since the two races once battled over the mountain regions. Dwarves see Humans as an industrious and proud people much like themselves and view humanity as a friend. The Svirfneblin are relatively new to the scene but the Dwarves view them with suspicion, at least until the Svirfneblin have proven themselves.
Alignment and Religion: Dwarves care more for honour and tradition almost to the exclusion of everything else. This can make them seem cold and distant but it is simply their way, ingrained in their being from countless years of doctrine and religious upbringing. Recently (for dwarves) the old theocracy was displaced by a new monarchy and it has been difficult for individual dwarves to adjust. Many are still highly religious, being a member of either insert deity name here or insert deity name here. Most dwarves are lawful neutral.
Adventurers: (Needs to be improved upon) Although dwarven adventurers are rare compared to humans, they can be found in most regions of the world. Dwarves often leave the confines of their redoubts to seek glory for their race, to find wealth with which to enrich the fortress-homes of their birth, or to reclaim fallen dwarven citadels from racial enemies. Dwarven warfare is often characterized by tunnel fighting and melee combat, and as such most dwarves tend toward classes such as fighters and barbarians.
Dwarf Racial Traits
+2 Constitution, +2 Wisdom, –2 Charisma: Dwarves are both tough and wise, but also a bit gruff.
Medium: Dwarves are Medium creatures and have no bonuses or penalties due to their size.
Slow and Steady: Dwarves have a base speed of 20 feet, but their speed is never modified by armor or encumbrance.
Darkvision: Dwarves can see in the dark up to 60 feet.
Defensive Training: Dwarves get a +4 dodge bonus to AC against monsters of the giant subtype.
Greed: Dwarves receive a +2 racial bonus on Appraise skill checks made to determine the price of nonmagical goods that contain precious metals or gemstones.
Hatred: Dwarves receive a +1 bonus on attack rolls against humanoid creatures of the orc and goblinoid subtypes due to special training against these hated foes.
Hardy: Dwarves receive a +2 racial bonus on saving throws against poison, spells, and spell-like abilities.
Stability: Dwarves receive a +4 racial bonus to their Combat Maneuver Defense when resisting a bull rush or trip attempt while standing on the ground.
Stonecunning: Dwarves receive a +2 bonus on Perception checks to potentially notice unusual stonework, such as traps and hidden doors located in stone walls or floors. They receive a check to notice such features whenever they pass within 10 feet of them, whether or not they are actively looking.
Weapon Familiarity: Dwarves are proficient with battleaxes, heavy picks, and warhammers, and treat any weapon with the word “dwarven” in its name as a martial weapon.
Languages: Dwarves begin play speaking Lustrean and Dwarven. Dwarves with high Intelligence scores can choose from the following: Elven (Bastarian), Giant, Gnome, Goblin, Orc, Terran, and Undercommon.
Favoured Classes: Barbarian and cleric. Dwarves may be lawful despite the normal alignment restrictions for the barbarian class.
